Developing Early Computer Science Concepts Through Play (PK-KDG)
The ESC of Central Ohio, powered by LEGO® Education, is providing professional learning for PK/KDG educators in computer science to support the expansion of CS programs in PreK-12 schools that are aligned with Ohio state standards. Teachers will leave with a LEGO® Education Coding Express set, a teacher training kit, and a certificate confirming the completed 12 contact hours.

This course is free to any currently licensed teacher in Ohio. 

Course Format
  • 6 Hour In-Person Professional Development Day – Monday, June 10th 2024, 9am - 4PM
    ESC Northgate Branch 7207 Northgate Way Westerville, OH 43082
    Lunch is on your own, a refrigerator is available onsite.
    Please bring a charged laptop, Chromebook, or iPad to this event.
  • Virtual PD Session 1 – Tuesday June 11th, 4 - 6pm
  • Virtual PD Session 2 – Thursday June 13th, 4 - 6pm
  • Virtual PD Session 3 – Tuesday June 18th, 4 - 6pm
Note: The cutoff for registration is: Friday, May 24th, 2024

In this professional learning series, teachers will…
  • explore ways a hands-on playful approach to learning can build teacher and student confidence in early computer science knowledge and skills
  • investigate standards aligned lessons designed to help students grow in their understanding of computing concepts such as sequencing, loops, cause and effect, etc.
  • develop a foundational understanding of computational practices and tips for integration in flexible and developmentally appropriate ways across the curriculum.
  • explore strategies in observing student understanding and ways to adjust the curriculum to meet the needs of different learners.

Project Goals
Equity - Students in OH schools will have access to high-quality, project- based learning experiences that foster and develop Computer Science knowledge, skills and competencies.

Engagement - Students will be active in their own learning by engaging in project based hands-on activities that engage their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Efficacy - Teachers will be able to effectively facilitate hands-on, project- based learning experiences focused on Computer Science that are aligned to the Ohio state standards for CS.

Expansion - Successful implementation will lead to expansion of CS programs within schools where teachers have become advocates for computer science.
